More and more migrants who apply for asylum in Italy: 121,000 applicants in 2016. Italy ranks second in Europe. Record in Germany
In 2016, 1,204,300 first-time asylum seekers applied for international protection in the Member States of the European Union (EU). The highest number of registered first-time applicants in 2016 was recorded in Germany, which was the country that hosted most applicants, both in absolute terms and relative to the population: 722,000 applicants, 63% more than in 2015. In Italy migrants who have applied for asylum for the first time were over 121,000, up 46% compared to 2015. In Europe, Italy is second in terms of total numbers, but only tenth in terms of the number of inhabitants.
