The UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants
On 19 September 2016, the United Nations General Assembly has hosted its first High-Level Summit to Address Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach to addressing the worst refugee crisis since the end of WWII. The summit provides a historic opportunity to develop a blueprint for a better international response. The New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants has been adopted on this meeting and it expresses the political will of world leaders to protect the rights of refugees and migrants, to save lives and share responsibility for large movements on a global scale.
Furthermore, the Secretary-General and the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration signed a new agreement by which IOM becomes a related organization of the United Nations, thus strengthening the comprehensive global approach to migration.
