Statistical analysis reveals that foreign pupils keep on growing in number and proportion: they are 786.630 pupils, accounting for 8.8% of the total number of pupils in Italian schools, whilst they accounted for 8.4% in the previous school year. The big boom however seems to have come to an halt: the annual average increase was of 60/70 thousand units from 2002/2003 to 2007/2008 whereas it showed less significant and less stable in successive years. Second Generation pupils are ever more numerous: 47.2% of foreign students were born in Italy.  Their share reaches 80% in pre-schools and 60% in primary schools. Pupils with foreign citizenship are first and foremost present in Northern and Central Regions, particularly concentrated in medium- and small-size provinces. As for their nationality, Romanian pupils prevail (148.602), followed by Albanese (104.710) and Moroccans (98.106). Considering genders, females and their Italian female classmates are almost equal in number. Female students of foreign origin in high schools even outnumber Italian female students; in particular in the north-east where they are 50.4% compared to 49.1%.
